O-An Zendo is financially self-supporting through regular memberships, donations (dana), and contributions of time and materials by its sangha, visitors, and friends.
Dana, the cultivation of generosity, is considered the First Perfection of Buddhist practice, and O-An encourages its members and visitors to offer dana (mainly in the form of a financial contribution) as an expression of gratitude for the priceless gift of the Dharma (teaching). A dana box is kept in the zendo entryway for these contributions.
Becoming a member of O-An also enables the zendo to meet its operating expenses and to maintain its building and grounds. Therefore, we encourage our practitioners to become regular members after 3-4 months’ attendance at O-An, if they anticipate being part of our community.
Regular memberships are $300/year, payable monthly ($25), semi-annually ($150), or annually ($300); student memberships are $180/year or $15/month; and family memberships are $480/year or $40/month. Members are eligible for discounts on the cost of zendo activities such as full-day sittings and workshops.
Members and others who practice at O-An are encouraged to support the zendo financially. Regular membership contributions are a significant and reliable means of support. Those who do not attend the zendo regularly, but who wish to support its mission and activities, are also encouraged to make a contribution. Additionally, we have periodic fundraisers and/or Zen workshops that help support the zendo.
Because O-An Zendo is a 501(c)3 non-profit corporation, all donations are tax deductible. O-An is governed by a board of directors who are elected to two-year terms and manage the zendo’s program and upkeep for the welfare of the sangha.
